本プロジェクトは、アメリカ合衆国内の日本語図書コレクションが、いつ、どのように形成され、変遷してきたかを通史的に明らかにすることをねらいとしています。そのために、蔵書史に関連する史料を米国内で広く収集し、文学、歴史学、社会学等さまざまな分野の調査に利用できるような有用な基礎データとして提供することをも目的としています。研究成果の出版とあわせて、本サイトでは、これら蔵書史史料の基礎データを公開、提供するサイトに発展させてゆく予定です。

これまでの調査

　2005年3月から、文部科学省海外先進教育支援プログラムの支援を得ながら、米コロンビア大学を拠点として10ヵ月にわたって各大学を調査。日本語の図書を豊富に抱える全米約25大学のアジア図書館、大学アーカイブ等を調査。各大学の司書、アーキビストの協力のもとで現在までに3000点以上の史料を収集。現在そのデータベース化、及び出版準備を進めてきた。その成果は2007年2月末に刊行。

コロラド大学海軍日本語学校アーカイブズ

コロラド大学（The University of Colorado at Boulder)のアーカイブズと協力し、同アーカイブが行っている海軍日本語学校アーカイバルプロジェクト（US Navy Japanese/Oriental Language School Archival Project: SLP)を紹介するための日本語サイト。

Atsuhiko Wada

The Japanese Book Collection Diachronic Research Project in the US (JBC Project) was planned and is being preceded by Atsuhiko Wada at Shinshu University. The aim of this project is to elucidate the histories of Japanese book collections in the US, mainly at university libraries. This project also focuses on gathering, analyzing, preserving, and publishing the information about the archives of these histories. The documents gathered so far through this research are as follows:

1) Papers or documents about the history of collections

2) Annual reports of librarians or libraries, and thier drafts.

3) Various daily documents produced by East Asia Libraries

4) Oral history or direct/ indirect interview with librarians

This project started in March 2005, and interviewed more than 50 current and retired librarians from 25 university libraries. Currently the examination and analysis of these documents are in process and the result will be published in 2006 in Japan.

This project has been supported by the Overseas Advanced Educational Research Practice Support Program in Japan, which is sponsored by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sport and Technology. This research was carried out from 20 Mar. 2005 to 12 Jan. 20 2006.

American Library Association Archives - ALA（American Library Association)の過去の文書類はイリノイ大に保管されている。このサイトではそのアーカイブの検索が可能。

North American Coordinating Council on Japanese Library Resources - 北米における大きな日本語図書コレクションの購入調整にあたるNCCのサイト。Newsletterが閲覧可能。

Directory of North American Collections of Old and Rare Japanese Books, Other Print Materials, and Manuscripts - 北米の図書館が所蔵する日本語図書の貴重書や文書のコレクションについての情報があり、それらコレクション関連の書誌情報も含まれている。

The Society for the History of Authorship, Reading and Publishing - 出版史、書物史関係の国際学会SHARPのサイト。北米のみを扱うサイトではないが、世界各国の蔵書史関連情報にかかわる。

研究課題名：米国大学図書館における日本語蔵書史の調査、及びその情報の利用、共有化ついての研究

研究課題番号： 18520118　　　　採択予定期間：２００６年度〜２００８年度

　JBCプロジェクトの成果を７月１１日より開催された国際出版史学会（Society for the History, Reading and Publishing, SHARP）で報告。今年のSHARPはオランダのハーグとライデンで行われました。

　一緒にパネルを行ったのは日系人収容所における図書館史を研究するAndrew Wertheimer（ハワイ大学）、戦前の日本語教育、教科書史を追うNoriko Asato（ネブラスカ大学）で、司会は『日本書物史』（The Book in Japan）の著書もあるPeter Kornicki（ケンブリッジ大学）で行われました。

　科学研究費で昨年の調査の補足資料収集、聞き取りのために渡米。２週間各地の大学をまわって、来年刊行予定のこのプロジェクトについての図書に用いる図版、写真資料の収集と許可申請、追加の史料収集等を行いました。原稿はほぼ完成に近づき、来年１月の刊行をめざしています。

　　調査プロジェクトの成果をまとめた『書物の日米関係』が新曜社より刊行されました（２月２８日刊）。なお、本書に誤記、誤植などがあった場合には、このサイトで適宜お知らせ致しますので、お気づきの点がありましたら、情報をお寄せ下さい。何分扱う史料の関連機関が多岐にわたるため、できるだけこうした情報をフィードバックしながら、正確な調査データに更新してゆきたいと考えています。また、印刷後、現在までに判明した正誤が若干ありますので、下記に掲げておきます。
